This may not be the 90's and a blog about 4 Non Blondes' music (boy I miss my Doc Martins), but this has been quite the theme song for several months in The Yaz.
From all of the shifting, moving, and weeding that has been going on you would wonder what all of these changes are, and if there will be more. When I first became the Teen Coordinator several months ago, the YA non-fic was in serious need of a makeover, badly! Actually before I came the Teen Coordinator I wanted to get my paws on the collection, because it was hard to find the book you were wanting, it was over crowded, and there were non-fic titles that were no relevant anymore and outdated. As many of you librarians know, weeding is very important to do in your collections. Weeding is a necessary evil that all of must do from time to time, and it's never a fun task (it's more overwhelming at times). As I can be a book hoarder myself, it's okay to just breathe and let go. Just imagine the books as a sad break up; you don't want to let go of the memories, but it's the healthy thing to do. The process is much easier. Or I seriously have an overactive imagination.
Any who...the non-fic is done and is prettier than ever. I have room to display books on every shelf, and non-fic is being used more by the teens now, it's easier to find a book, and theirs order and everything looks organized. I'm happy with how it turned out.
Sorry no before pictures. Miss Meg got the idea to take pictures of the non-fic AFTER she had weeded the collection. Oops!
The next project I was up against was the YA Fiction. Our bookshelves were overflowing, and we were running out of room to place books where they belonged. The pages were getting frustrated and stacking the books on top of other books because there was no room! An unhappy page, makes an unhappy Miss Meg. Something had to give. So, I came to the rescue a few days ago and started to weed. Granted, I'm still working on the YA Fic, but I should be done by the end of August. That is my goal. Here are a few before and after shots so far:
Before shot of the YA Fiction collection
(I forgot to take a before shot starting in the A's. At least I remembered!)
After shot of the YA Fiction
(this starts the YA Fic collection)
It's like Christmas in The Yaz, and the pages are so happy which means I'm happy, too! See, weeding isn't all bad once you've accepted the change it will give. Change can be a very scary thing, especially when you've become comfortable with your space. Only once you start do you realize the impact and greatness it will bring. My tip is to not be scared. Investigate with your director or supervisor, express your ideas, and see what happens. You won't know until you try! Happy weeding!
